Nest Thermostat Not Working: Fixes
TL;DR
Nest thermostat faults fall into three groups: power and charging problems at the display, communication problems between the display and the heat link, and heating faults that have nothing to do with the thermostat. Identify the group first. A display that will not hold charge is a wiring or power issue, not a dead device.

The single most useful thing to understand about this system is that the wall display is not what switches your boiler on. A separate unit — the heat link — is wired to the boiler and does the actual switching. The display tells it what to do. When something goes wrong, working out which of the two is at fault saves a great deal of time.
The Battery and Charging Issue
This is the classic fault, and it is widely misdiagnosed as a dead thermostat.
The display contains a small rechargeable battery which is topped up from the wiring. If the charging current is marginal, the battery slowly discharges over days or weeks until the display goes blank or starts behaving erratically. The device is not faulty; it is being undercharged.
Signs to watch for: the screen dimming or going blank intermittently, the unit restarting on its own, connectivity dropping in and out, or the heating running on schedule but the display appearing dead.
A short-term test is to charge the display over USB and see whether normal behaviour returns. If it does, and then degrades again over the following days, the problem is the charging path in the installation rather than the device. That usually needs an engineer to resolve, and often relates to how the wiring was configured at installation.
Display and Heat Link Not Communicating
Symptoms: the display works but changing the temperature does nothing at the boiler, or the display reports it cannot find the heat link.
The two units communicate wirelessly if they were installed that way. Distance, thick walls, and new metal appliances in the path can all degrade the link. Restarting both units in the right order usually re-establishes it; persistent drops point to a siting problem.
Test which side is at fault by operating the heat link's manual control directly. If the boiler fires from the heat link, the boiler and heat link are fine and the problem is the link to the display. If the boiler does not fire, you have a boiler or wiring problem.
Boiler Not Firing Despite a Call for Heat
If the heat link is calling for heat and the boiler does nothing, stop troubleshooting the thermostat. The control side has done its job.
Check the boiler display for a fault code, check system pressure, and check that other gas appliances work. Heating Runs When It Should Not
Check for a manual override at the heat link, a hot water schedule overlapping the heating schedule, and frost protection or eco modes engaging at low temperatures. Learning features can also produce heating at times you did not explicitly set — if that is unwelcome, the learning behaviour can be turned off and a fixed schedule used instead.
Rooms Never Reach Temperature
If the boiler is running but the house is not getting warm, the thermostat is reporting reality accurately and the problem is elsewhere in the system. The usual causes are unbalanced radiators, trapped air, sludge restricting circulation, undersized radiators, or a failing pump. Also consider placement. A thermostat in a hallway will satisfy quickly and shut the heating off while the living room is still cold. That is a siting problem, not a fault.
Getting the Efficiency It Promises
Where these thermostats earn their keep is in modulating control — telling the boiler how hard to work rather than simply on or off. If your boiler supports it and the installation uses it, the boiler runs longer and cooler, which is precisely where a condensing boiler is most efficient. What To Leave To An Engineer
Restarting units, checking schedules, and charging the display over USB are all fine to do yourself. Anything behind the heat link's cover, at the boiler terminals, or involving the wiring centre is not. A miswired heating control can cause short-cycling that damages the appliance over time, and any work on the gas side must be done by someone on the Gas Safe Register.
