Newport Pagnell is the old market town at the north-eastern corner of Milton Keynes, on the far side of the M1 from the rest of the city. It sits where the River Ouzel (the Lovat) meets the Great Ouse, with Tickford Bridge carrying traffic over the Lovat and Bury Field common on the north-west edge. From our base at Grange Farm it is about 7 miles by road, out along the A509 or through the grid roads and over junction 14, and it usually takes us 15 to 20 minutes in normal traffic. The whole town is MK16. The town centre around the High Street, St John Street, Silver Street and Tickford Street is a conservation area with more than a hundred listed buildings, some going back to the 16th century, and Victorian terraces run between the old town and the site of the railway station that closed in 1967. From the late 1960s the town roughly tripled in size with three big estates: the Rivers estate, the Poets estate and Green Park. Since then there has been steady infill and redevelopment, including Mulberry Park near the A509, new homes on the former mustard factory and North Crawley Road industrial sites, and the large Tickford Fields Farm development still being built out to the east. Water here comes from Anglian Water and is hard, so limescale is a fact of life for every boiler and hot water cylinder in the town. A lot of the estate housing still has its original heating layout from the 1960s and 1970s, or a replacement boiler bolted onto that layout, and that is where most of our repair work in Newport Pagnell comes from.
