Towcester (said "toaster") is a market town in West Northamptonshire, about 12 miles north-west of our base at Grange Farm. From MK8 it is a straight run up the A5, which is the old Roman Watling Street, and the same road runs through the middle of the town as its high street. The town grew up as the Roman settlement of Lactodurum and later did well out of the coaching trade, which is why Watling Street still has its old inns, the 1865 Town Hall, St Lawrence's Church and the narrow lanes such as Park Street and Chantry Lane running off it. The biggest change is Towcester Vale, the urban extension south of the town off the London Road, given outline permission in 2015 for 2,750 homes. Persimmon's Towcester Grange, David Wilson's The Watlings and Redrow's Burcote Park at Wood Burcote are all part of that, and the relief road linking the A5 to the A43 finally opened in May 2026.
