Towcester (said "toaster") is a market town in West Northamptonshire, about 12 miles north-west of our base at Grange Farm. From MK8 it is a straight run up the A5, which is the old Roman Watling Street, and the same road runs through the middle of the town as its high street. The town grew up as the Roman settlement of Lactodurum and later did well out of the coaching trade, which is why Watling Street still has its old inns, the 1865 Town Hall, St Lawrence's Church and the narrow lanes such as Park Street and Chantry Lane running off it. The centre has been a conservation area since 1970, extended in 2012 to take in the Victorian terraces on Richmond Road, Pomfret Road and Queens Road. Most of the housing is much newer than that. The 2021 Census put the parish at around 11,500 people, and the council's own appraisal describes interwar council housing to the south-west of the old town followed by the main spread of estates from the 1960s onwards. The biggest change is Towcester Vale, the urban extension south of the town off the London Road, given outline permission in 2015 for 2,750 homes. Persimmon's Towcester Grange, David Wilson's The Watlings and Redrow's Burcote Park at Wood Burcote are all part of that, and the relief road linking the A5 to the A43 finally opened in May 2026. For heating and plumbing that gives us three very different jobs in one town: solid-walled stone and brick buildings in the centre, 1960s to 1990s estates with boilers and cylinders coming to the end of their lives, and new builds still under warranty. Towcester is on Anglian Water, which classes the local supply as hard, so limescale is a factor in all three.
