Olney is a limestone market town on the River Great Ouse at the very north of Buckinghamshire, about 13 miles from our base at Grange Farm. You reach it up the A509 through Newport Pagnell, and the same road carries on north to Wellingborough. It is part of the City of Milton Keynes for council purposes but feels like a separate place: a long High Street of pale stone houses running north from the church and the Market Place, with the newer housing spread out to the north and west. Olney Town Council runs the weekly market and the town is best known for the Shrove Tuesday pancake race and for William Cowper and John Newton, whose home is now the Cowper and Newton Museum on the Market Place. The housing splits cleanly by age. The conservation area takes in the Market Place, High Street, Silver End, Church Street and Weston Road, where most buildings are 17th and 18th century limestone with solid walls and old chimneys. Red brick terraces went up on Midland Road, Newton Road and Station Road in the 1890s and 1900s for the shoe factory workers, and there are 1930s semis at Moores Hill. After the war the town grew fast: council housing at Dagnall Road in the 1950s, then estate after estate across the west side between Wellingborough Road and Weston Road, and around Aspreys and Yardley Road. Chantry Rise and Wagstaff Way near the old tannery are late 20th century, and new homes have gone up off Lavendon Road and Warrington Road since the neighbourhood plan. Anglian Water supplies the town and the water is hard, which is why we see so much scale in older boilers and hot water cylinders here.
