Leighton Buzzard is a market town in the south west corner of Bedfordshire, about 14 miles south of our base at Grange Farm. The A4146 runs straight down from Bletchley, so it is one of the easier towns for us to reach outside Milton Keynes. The built-up area takes in Linslade on the west bank of the River Ouzel, which was a separate Buckinghamshire town until 1965. The Grand Union Canal and the West Coast Main Line both run through Linslade, and the railway station sits on that side of the river even though it carries the Leighton Buzzard name. The housing is a real mix. The High Street, Market Square and Church Square around All Saints Church are covered by a conservation area, with more than 70 listed buildings, solid walls and no cavity to insulate. Linslade has its own conservation area of Victorian terraces laid out in a grid around St Barnabas Church after the station opened in 1838. Both towns then spread out from the late 1960s onwards, with big estates added through the 1970s on the Linslade side around Bideford Green and on the Leighton side out towards Leedon and Vandyke Road. The newest homes are on the east and south: Sandhills off Billington Road, Clipstone Park between Vandyke Road and Stanbridge Road, and Chamberlains Barn off Heath Road on the old sand quarry. The water is hard across the whole town. Central Bedfordshire is split between Anglian Water and Affinity Water and both class the supply here as hard, so limescale is the background to most of the heating problems we see, especially in the older combi boilers and hot water cylinders.
