Buckingham is a market town about 12 miles west of Milton Keynes, straight out along the A421 from our base at Grange Farm. It has its own town council but the district council is Buckinghamshire Council, not Milton Keynes. The town sits in a loop of the River Great Ouse, with Bourton Park and Chandos Park running along the river and the old railway line now a footpath called the Railway Walk. The University of Buckingham occupies the Hunter Street area at the top of the river loop. The town centre is a conservation area. A fire in 1725 destroyed much of Castle Street, Castle Hill and Market Hill, so what stands there now is largely Georgian, in red brick and the local pale limestone, with the Old Gaol of 1748 and the Town Hall in the Market Square. Bourtonville on the London Road side was built after the First World War, and Westfields and Bath Lane are mid-twentieth century. From 1971 the Buckingham Development Company pushed the town out to the south and east and the bypass followed in the 1980s. Linden Village, Badgers and Lace Hill to the south-east and Mount Pleasant to the south are all modern estates, and building has carried on at Tingewick Road and St Rumbold's Fields on the west side. Mains water here comes from Anglian Water and is hard. That matters for heating: scale builds up in hot water cylinders, combi heat exchangers and kettles, and it is the first thing we think about when a boiler in Buckingham is losing hot water performance.
