Bletchley is the big town at the southern end of Milton Keynes, about five miles down the grid roads from our base at Grange Farm. It was here long before the new city: a railway junction from 1838, merged with the old market town of Fenny Stratford, and then a London overspill town through the 1950s and 1960s. Today it is split by the West Coast Main Line into two parishes, West Bletchley on one side and Bletchley and Fenny Stratford on the other, with Newton Leys added at the southern tip. The 2021 Census counted around 45,000 people across the whole built-up area, which makes it the largest place we cover outside central MK. The housing tells that story. Around the station and along Queensway there are red brick Victorian and Edwardian terraces from the railway years. West of the line, the post-war council estates went up in a rush for London families: the Counties, Castles and Rivers estates, then the long arc of Whaddon Way in the 1960s and 1970s. South of Fenny Stratford, the Greater London Council built the Lakes Estate at Water Eaton in 1968, laid out on the Radburn pattern with streets named after British lakes. Newton Leys is the newest part, built on the old brickworks since 2006 by Taylor Wimpey, Persimmon and Bovis. Anglian Water supplies the whole town and the water is hard. Add sixty years of boilers, cylinders and copper pipe across those estates and you have a place where limescale, sludge and tired pipework are the everyday jobs, alongside new-build systems in Newton Leys that were never set up properly in the first place.
