Woburn Sands is a small town on the south-eastern edge of Milton Keynes, about 5 miles from the city centre and 2 miles from Junction 13 of the M1. It sits at the foot of the Greensand Ridge, and the sandy ground that gives the town its name is the same greensand that runs on under Aspley Heath and the woods behind it. The county boundary between Buckinghamshire and Bedfordshire runs through the built-up area: broadly, the streets east of Weathercock Lane and south of Hardwick Road are in Aspley Guise and Aspley Heath, which are Central Bedfordshire, while the High Street and the rest of the parish are Milton Keynes. In practice it is one town, and we treat it as one. The second half of the twentieth century added estates and infill around the older core, and from 2006 the Parklands development on the old Plysu and Nampak factory site added several hundred newer houses and flats. More new housing is going up off Newport Road, and the South East Milton Keynes extension planned between Woburn Sands, Wavendon and Bow Brickhill will bring the city right up to the town's edge. Anglian Water supplies the town and classes the water as hard, so limescale in cylinders, boilers and heat exchangers is a fact of life here, particularly in the older houses that have had decades of it.
