Worcester Bosch Boiler Repair Milton Keynes: Faults and Warranty

Worcester Bosch is the boiler we see more than any other in Milton Keynes, from Greenstar i and CDi units fitted in the grid-square estates years ago to the newer Greenstar models in the new-build developments. The reputation is deserved, but they do go wrong, and when one does it matters who works on it, both for the fix and for the warranty.

This guide covers the faults we are called to most, what you can safely check before ringing anyone, what a repair quote is actually made of, and what the warranty does and does not depend on. One thing first: anything involving the gas supply, the flue or the inside of the casing must be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer. Do not open a Worcester Bosch to have a look. It is unsafe, it is unlawful for gas work, and it can void the warranty.

The Worcester Bosch faults we see most

Low pressure. The most common call by a distance. The gauge should sit between 1 and 1.5 bar cold. Below that the boiler will not fire and will show a low pressure code. If a radiator was bled recently, a top-up through the filling key or loop is all it needs. If it drops again within weeks, water is escaping somewhere: a weeping radiator valve, a pinhole in a pipe, the pressure relief valve passing, or an expansion vessel that has lost its charge and is pushing water out through the relief pipe. EA: flame not detected. The boiler tried to light and could not keep a flame. On the Greenstar i, Si and CDi ranges this is the code you will see most. Causes range from a frozen condensate pipe and low gas pressure to a fouled electrode, a tired ignition lead or a flue problem. Try one reset. If it comes back, stop and call. Frozen condensate pipe. Every cold snap brings a run of calls where the boiler has stopped overnight with a fault code. The white plastic condensate pipe outside has frozen and the boiler has shut down to protect itself. Pour warm, not boiling, water along the frozen section, then reset. If it happens every winter the pipe needs re-routing, upsizing or insulating properly, which is a small job that ends the problem.

Diverter valve. Hot water but no heating, or heating but no hot water, on a combi. The valve that switches between the two has stuck. Common on Worcester combis once they are into their second decade, and a routine repair.

Pump and fan. A pump that is failing gives you a boiler that fires but radiators that stay cool, sometimes with a hum from the boiler. A fan bearing on the way out gives a rattle or whine at start-up and, eventually, a fan fault code. Both are straightforward replacements for an engineer.

Heat exchanger. In Milton Keynes water, a Worcester that has run for years without a magnetic filter or inhibitor can end up with a scaled or blocked heat exchanger, which shows as kettling noises, overheating lockouts or a boiler that struggles to reach temperature. A note on fault codes: the older Greenstar ranges use two-character codes like EA, and the newer models show numbers with a letter. Write down exactly what the display says before you call. It shortens the diagnosis and often means the right part comes on the first visit.

What you can safely do yourself

• Check the pressure gauge and top up through the filling loop or key if it is low, following the manual.
• Reset once. If it locks out again, leave it and call.
• Bleed radiators if they are cold at the top.
• Check the condensate pipe for ice in freezing weather and thaw it with warm water.
• Check the obvious: the fused spur is on, the thermostat is calling, the programmer is in an on period, the gas meter has not tripped.
• Note the fault code and the boiler model from the label or the front of the case.

Leave to a Gas Safe registered engineer: anything behind the casing, the ignition parts, diverter valve, pump, fan, PCB and heat exchanger, tracing internal leaks, and anything on the gas valve or flue. What a Worcester Bosch repair quote is made of

Repair prices are not one number because repairs are not one job. A quote is made of the diagnosis visit, the part, and the labour to fit it, and each of those varies.

• The diagnosis. Some faults are obvious from the code and a quick test. Others, particularly intermittent lockouts and slow pressure loss, take longer to pin down, and an honest engineer will say so rather than guess at a part.
• The part. Genuine Worcester Bosch parts cost more than pattern parts and the warranty requires them. A pressure sensor and an ignition lead sit at one end; a PCB, fan or heat exchanger at the other. Which range and age of boiler you have also matters, because parts for the older ranges are getting scarcer.
• The labour. An ignition lead is a short job. A heat exchanger is most of a day with a drain-down.
• What else is found. A failed expansion vessel behind a low pressure fault. A sludged system behind a failed pump. A good engineer tells you about these and quotes them separately rather than replacing the pump and leaving the cause in place.

Ask for the fault, the part and the labour to be set out in writing before you say yes. And if the boiler is old and the repair is large, ask the engineer straight out whether they would spend the money on it.

Warranty: what actually matters

Worcester Bosch offers long guarantees on the Greenstar range, up to twelve years when the boiler is installed and registered by a Worcester Bosch Accredited Installer, which Plumbline MK is. Keeping that guarantee alive depends on two things: an annual service by a Gas Safe registered engineer, with the records kept, and genuine parts in any repair. Miss a service and you can find the cover has lapsed when you need it.

The point most repair companies will not tell you: if your boiler is still inside its guarantee, ring Worcester Bosch before you pay anyone. A covered fault will be repaired under the guarantee by their own engineers, and paying a third party for it is money wasted. We would rather tell you that on the phone than take the job. Why Milton Keynes Worcesters fail the way they do

Our water is very hard, and it shows in the faults. Scaled heat exchangers, seized diverter valves and pumps worn by sludge are all more common here than in soft water areas. The 1970s and 1980s houses often have microbore pipework that sludges up quickly and starves the pump. The new-build estates have younger boilers but were not always fitted with a filter.
