Ideal Boiler Installation Milton Keynes: Logic, Vogue, Warranty

Ideal Heating has been making boilers in Hull for over a century and it is one of the few major brands still manufacturing in Britain. For Milton Keynes homeowners it sits in the value to mid tier: usually cheaper to buy than an equivalent Worcester Bosch or Vaillant, with a straightforward range, good parts availability and warranty terms that compete well above its price. We fit a lot of them, particularly in straight swaps and in the newer estates where an Ideal was the original boiler.

One thing first. A gas boiler must be installed by a Gas Safe registered engineer. It is the law, and Ideal will not honour the warranty otherwise. Plumbline MK is Gas Safe registered (957816) and an Ideal approved installer.

Which Ideal fits your home

The range is simpler than the model names suggest. Always check the current Ideal literature for the exact model and warranty at the time you buy, because names and terms move.

Logic combi. The entry point. Same core engineering as the rest of the range, in a compact case, with a shorter standard warranty. Suits smaller homes, rentals and budget-led swaps where the system is in good order.

Logic Max combi. The volume seller and the one we fit most. It comes with a system filter as part of the package and a longer warranty than the plain Logic when it is fitted and registered by an approved installer. It suits most two to four bedroom homes with one bathroom, which describes a large share of the grid-square estates and the newer developments alike.

Vogue Max combi. The premium option. Quieter, better controls, built-in weather compensation and the longest warranty in the Ideal range. Worth the step up in a three to five bedroom house where you intend to stay put and running cost matters as much as the price on the day.

Logic system and heat-only. For homes with two or more bathrooms, or where a hot water cylinder is staying. The system version pairs with an unvented cylinder; the heat-only version works with a traditional vented cylinder and loft tank. If you have two showers running at once most mornings, this is the conversation to have rather than forcing a big combi to do a job it cannot.

Output matters as much as model. A combi is sized to the hot water flow you need, not the number of radiators, and a survey should measure your incoming mains flow before anyone picks a kilowatt figure. Fitting a large combi to a weak main is the most common reason people are disappointed with a new boiler.

What a fully fitted Ideal installation includes

Two quotes for the same boiler can differ a lot, and the difference is nearly always in the work around the boiler. A complete quote should name each of these:

• The exact model and output, not just the brand.
• A new flue and any extension or plume kit the position needs.
• A system clean before the new boiler goes on. Ideal's heat exchanger is aluminium and it needs clean, inhibited water to last. A chemical clean suits a reasonably clean system; a sludged one needs a powerflush. In MK's hard water this is the step that matters most, and it is the one a cheap quote quietly leaves out.
• A magnetic system filter fitted on the return.
• Inhibitor dosed in and, ideally, a scale reducer on the cold feed given the water here.
• Controls. Every new combi must be fitted with the controls the Building Regulations require. We include a Hive smart thermostat free with a new boiler install.
• Gas pipe check. Many older MK houses have a gas run that will not feed a modern combi at full output. A survey should measure it, and if it needs upgrading that should be in the quote, not discovered on the day.
• Condensate. A properly routed and, where outside, insulated condensate pipe. Frozen condensate is the number one winter breakdown call.
• Commissioning to Ideal's specification, the Benchmark logbook completed, and the Building Regulations notification lodged through Gas Safe.
• Warranty registration with Ideal at the time of installation. This is what switches the long warranty on.
• Removal and disposal of the old boiler and making good around the work.

Quoted separately, and flagged at survey rather than sprung later, are things like moving the boiler to a new position, a long or vertical flue run, asbestos handling in some pre-1985 properties, and building work.

What the Ideal warranty actually depends on

Ideal's warranties cover parts and labour for the stated period, but only if three things are true: the boiler was fitted by a Gas Safe registered engineer who registered it with Ideal at installation; it is serviced every year by a Gas Safe registered engineer; and genuine Ideal parts are used in any repair. Miss a service and you may find the cover has lapsed exactly when you need it.

The longer warranties on the Logic Max and Vogue Max are tied to the installer's status with Ideal at the point of installation. Once the boiler is registered, an annual service by any Gas Safe engineer keeps it valid, so you are not locked to one company for life, but keep the service records.

The honest point most brand pages skip: a long warranty is not a reason to skip the system clean. Fitting a new Logic Max onto a fifteen-year-old sludged system without flushing it first will not only shorten the boiler's life, it gives Ideal grounds to decline a claim on the heat exchanger. If anyone quotes you an Ideal without a flush or filter, that is the corner being cut.

Ideal in Milton Keynes homes

On the 1970s and 1980s grid-square estates, a Logic Max combi swap is usually a one-day job provided the pipework is sound, with the system clean being the part that decides how well it ages. In the older terraces of Wolverton and Bletchley and the stone villages, the survey has more to check: the gas run, the flue route through thick walls, and whether an old open-vented system is being converted. On the new-build estates the original boiler is often an Ideal already and a like-for-like swap is straightforward, but do not assume a filter was fitted first time round.

How long it takes

A like-for-like combi swap in the same position is normally done in a day, with heating and hot water back the same evening. Are Ideal boilers any good?

Yes, for the right home. They are well made, British built, parts are easy to get, and the Logic Max and Vogue Max warranties compete with brands that cost more. They are not built to quite the same specification as the top Worcester Bosch or Vaillant models, and the aluminium heat exchanger means the system must be clean and serviced every year, especially in hard water.

How long is the warranty on an Ideal Logic Max?

Ideal publishes a long parts and labour warranty on the Logic Max when it is installed and registered by an approved installer, and a longer one again on the Vogue Max. Check the exact figure for the model you are buying at the time, and remember it depends on annual servicing.

Do I need a powerflush before a new Ideal boiler?

You need the system cleaned. Whether that is a chemical clean or a full powerflush depends on how much sludge is in it, which a survey will tell you. In Milton Keynes most systems over ten years old that have never had a filter need the full flush.
